Waterlogging and worms
Storm Ciarán delivered record breaking amounts of rain across Europe. Soils are waterlogged so what can you do to future proof your garden? And how can earthworms help to prevent flooding?
Last weekend was South West’s turn for some heavy rain. Storm Ciarán brought torrential downpours that led to overflowing gutters and drains. The local roads were inundated and there was localised flooding. Southern England got off lightly compared with Italy where Ciarán delivered 20 cm / 8in of rain in just 3 hours across much of Tuscany causing widespread damage.
On the plus side my water harvesting system, which is formed from a system of rills and ponds, is full to capacity and is helping to slow the flow of surface water by directing water away from our local stream and into a swampy area.
A couple of weeks ago I posted information about flooding and what to do if your garden is inundated with water. But with so much water falling in the last few weeks, I thought I would focus a bit more on how to cope with waterlogged soil.
