The longest night, the antics of a wren and growing citrus

The shortest day … I am so pleased to get to this point in the year, when from now on the days get longer and the new season approaches. I was watching the photos of the volcanic eruption in Iceland, thinking how difficult it must be for the services working to protect buildings from the lava flows in what is almost continual darkness at this time of year. So, its really encouraging to think that every day brings a few more minutes of light.

I know I have been going on about leaf litter and its benefits, so this observation proves just how valuable they are… I was sitting at a window just looking at the garden when I noticed a couple of wrens. It was an utter pleasure to be able to watch them work their way through a flower bed, turning the fallen leaves, looking for minibeasts to eat. Leaves are just the perfect mulch for the beds – so easy – just let them stay where they fall creating habitats for many small beasties that will then be enjoyed by birds. No work gardeni…
