Nature is clever and the more we can let it in to lend a helping hand, the more climate change savvy our veg plots will be.
Saving some of your own seed each year reaps lots of rewards, not least of all in the fact that it’s free and potentially more adapted to your own individual growing conditions as a result of having been produced there. You can also hone out the best traits in your seed; choosing to save from veg that has the best flavour, or which is most productive or hardy against the elements. How cool it is that!?!
Very. Yet even better, arguably are the plants that reproduce without any help at all!
Yes, some are a bit cheeky in their spreading ways but kept in their place, incredibly useful none-the-less. Others, make great ground cover around other plants and so help protect the soil, and some need to be left in the ground for longer, for seeds for free the following year. Regardless, all are well worth a look and here is my pick of the bountiful best:
