More flooding and some soil news ..... and its not that good
Another 51mm rain fell on my Somerset garden over Sunday and Monday. To give you some idea of just how much, overnight more than 7,000 litres of water fell on one of my larger barn roofs.
Since I started this substack, all I seem to have written about is water …. And lots has fallen over the last two months which has worrying implications for next year – the anaerobic conditions that exist in waterlogged soil, the loss of earthworms, the proliferation of slugs and snails, the rotting of bulbs and other overwintering plants. It been difficult conditions for hibernating animals too, as mild damp weather alternating with periods of sub-zero is far from ideal.
The two photos above show one of the allotment plots on my farm, the first taken on Monday with standing water and the second today. All the water has drained away which is a testament to the no-dig methods that this allotmenteer uses.
